Shaun Project Space II

This Weeks Shaun Project Space Crits where from the works of;

  • Myself - Emma-Louise Phillips

  • Connor Jackson

  • Ines Bento Serrano

This week's crit was unquestionably the week of the painters, all three participants including myself brought down an array of paintings to be displayed and critiqued. One of the most interesting pointers about our Crit as whole group, even though we all shared the common passion for using paint everyone of us presented our paint on a different surface material.

Ines Serrano - Crit Layout

Ines paintings were all found object her main material to use is cardboard and the one Shirt displayed in the middle. One thing that stood out to me the most was the warped unevenness of the cardboard, her works was not displayed as neat as Canvas, however you could tell the cardboard was cut to form a frame. I was left curious over the matter if Ines purposely wanted her work to not meet the conceptual straight and even standards that most artists chose to present their work. I was a bit unsure on what Ines work represented but i assumed it was something to do with Mother nature. I think it would to propel in this project Ines should continue to use recycled items to paint such as plant pots things that can easily be associated with the environment and mother nature.

Connor Jackson presented us 3 identical pieces of work all with the same message including the phrase "Don't worry about it, everything will be okay". This calming message does quite the opposite to me and start to get my mind wondering over what the problem is in the first place that I need to be reassured to stay calm. When Connor started to explain his action plan to progress his project, I really believed in his project and thought this will be an interesting project to watch develop. Connor wants to bring in everyday objects such as cups,chairs bins, traffic cones etc. And Paint them with his soothing message then return these found objects back to the original environments. I am also curious if Connor can turn almost any object we stumble across and how he will present this object to no longer be used for what it was intended for but instead be used for the appeal of Art. I hope that Connor keeps to these ideas as it would be really interesting to stumble across these objects around University.
